What to wear to the races

Butter Yellow Bustier Maxi on the members' lawn at the spring races

For the races in Australia, most women wear a dress that holds its shape all day, from knee length to full length, in a colour that suits the race day, with shoes that can walk on grass and something for the hair. General admission at Flemington has no dress regulations, but racegoers dress up.

What do women wear to the races in Australia?

A dress is the usual choice: a fitted maxi, a midi or a smart mini, with a hat, a fascinator or a headpiece. The Victoria Racing Club asks general admission racegoers to dress suitably and to be comfortable. The Members Enclosure has its own rules, so check your ticket before you plan the outfit.

What colours do you wear to the races?

Each day of the Melbourne Cup Carnival has its own spirit. Derby Day is black and white. Melbourne Cup Day is the day for colour. Oaks Day is the most glamorous, with floaty silhouettes, soft pastels and florals. Stakes Day feels like a garden party. Outside the Carnival, spring colours and clean prints work at any track.

Can you wear black to the races?

Yes. Black is at home at the races, and on Derby Day it is the tradition, paired with white. On the other days, a black dress looks right with a lighter headpiece or a touch of colour in the bag or shoes.

What not to wear to the races?

In the Members Enclosure at Flemington, denim is not permitted, and neither are joggers, runners or thongs. Anywhere at the track, avoid thin stiletto heels on the lawn and a dress you need to hold all day: you will be walking, standing and queuing for hours.

What shoes should you wear to the races?

Block heels, wedges or heels with protectors, which do not sink into the grass. Bring a pair of flats in your bag for the walk home.

What should you wear to the races on a hot day, or when it rains?

Check the forecast and layer, as the Victoria Racing Club suggests: a light blazer or wrap over the dress for the morning and the evening, a fabric that breathes in the sun, and a dress that still looks good when the blazer comes off.

Maxi or mini for race day?

Both work. A full-length dress keeps a clean line from the first race to the last photo; a mini feels right for Derby Day in black or for the after-party. Our Butter Yellow Bustier Maxi is in 6 colours, the Red Halter Maxi in red, pink, sky blue, and the Burgundy Draped Mini comes in black.
